Next-Generation Steel for Additive Manufacturing

Despite the growth of metal additive manufacturing (AM), there has been limited research in developing new materials and alloys that could further enhance AM processes. However, the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering has received a three-year award of $449,000 from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to explore next-generation metals, especially steel, for use in AM.

GKN Develops Large-Scale Additive Process

GKN Aerospace and the U.S. Energy Department's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have signed a five-year research agreement focused on additive manufacturing (AM). Under the agreement, GKN is developing a large-scale AM process that could significantly improve the manufacture of large titanium aerospace components.

Experiment in Space to Aid Metal Powder as a Recyclable Fuel

Canada's McGill University believes that metal powders could be the key to clean energy in the future.

For the last 20 years, researchers at McGill have been studying how metal powders, such as iron, could be used as an alternative fuel source that produces zero carbon emissions. When burned, these powders are capable of producing more energy than an equivalent volume of gasoline. Formation of a Trade Association for the Metal AM Industry

The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) is proud to announce its intention to form a trade association for the metal additive manufacturing (AM) industry. An organizational meeting will be held at the conclusion of the AMPM2017 conference on June 16 at the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Manufacturers of metal AM products, precursor materials, and equipment manufacturers that support the metal AM industry are all welcome to attend. There is no fee to attend the organizational meeting.

Veteran AM Bootcamp Expanded

America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, in partnership with 3D Veterans, has received a Google.org grant to expand the Additive Manufacturing Bootcamp for veterans created last fall to teach U.S. military veterans 3D printing, CAD drawing, 3D scanning, and traditional manufacturing. These skills will be useful as veterans return to an increasingly digital workforce in the high-demand advanced manufacturing industry.

Study: Women in Manufacturing

The Manufacturing Institute, Washington; Deloitte, New York; and APICS, Chicago; have released a study, "Women in Manufacturing: Stepping up to make an impact that matters." The joint study is the result of more than 600 survey responses from women professionals in manufacturing, along with nearly 20 manufacturing executive interviews. The insights point to how companies can effectively recruit, retain and advance talented women in manufacturing, and illustrates ways that women in manufacturing are making an impact in the industry through programs like STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead.

Boeing, Chicago, Ill., recently announced that its 787 Dreamliners will soon be manufactured with the world's first FAA-approved titanium metal additive manufactured (AM) components with the help of Norsk Titanium AS, Norway.

Ford Tests 3D Printing for Auto Parts

Ford Motor Company is exploring how large-scale one-piece auto parts, like spoilers, could be made using metal additive manufacturing (AM) for prototyping and future production vehicles with a new AM system capable of printing automotive parts of practically any shape or length. The new system is housed at Ford Research and Innovation Center in Dearborn, Mich.

Canada Makes Teams Up for Space-Bound Part

Canada Makes, FusiA, and MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA), all located in Canada, have partnered to build metal additive manufactured (AM) components to be launched into space as part of a satellite later this year. The parts are spacecraft interface brackets for an antenna and are in the process of being optimized for a flight project. The funding, design, and build of the metal component is a team effort: Canada Makes provided funding through its Metal Additive Demonstration Program supported by NRC-IRAP, MDA designed the component, and FusiA built it.
