University of Florida AM Lab

The Herbert Wertheim Laboratory for Engineering Excellence at the University of Florida has a state-of-the-art additive manufacturing (AM) lab that signals new possibilities for research and workforce development. At the heart of the lab is the Renishaw AM-400 laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) system—a metal 3D printer capable of producing complex components from materials such as titanium, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Pennsylvania High School Students Manufacturing Video Contest

Educating high school students about advanced manufacturing, like powder metallurgy, is playing a vital role in strengthening workforce development across Northern Pennsylvania. Recently, students from six counties gathered in Elk County to present specialized video projects highlighting local manufacturing careers and technology. The initiative connected students from Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, Cameron, McKean, and Potter counties with regional businesses, giving them firsthand exposure to advanced production environments and innovation in today’s facilities.

Colibrium Additive, a GE Aerospace (GE) company, West Chester, Ohio, received a $31 million contract from the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, or NAVAIR, to support an initiative aimed at speeding the testing, qualification and certification of metal parts made through additive manufacturing.

Elmet Technologies LLC, Lewiston, Maine, a manufacturer of tungsten and molybdenum, has received a US Patent for the “Fabrication of Metallic Parts by Additive Manufacturing”. The patented process covers the fabrication of metallic objects comprising a mixture or alloy of tungsten heavy alloys with controlled additions of nickel, iron, copper, cobalt, or manganese.

Gevorkyan, a.s., Vikanová, Slovakia, has purchased all assets of powder metallurgy parts producer Sinteris, Bologna, Italy.

Phoenix Sintered Metals, LLC, Brockway, Pennsylvania, has acquired Custom Industrial Processing, Inc., a precision CNC machining, mechanical plating/galvanizing, and resin impregnation provider in St. Marys. Pennsylvania. Phoenix will continue operations at the St. Marys facility under the new name Phoenix Industrial Services, LLC.

Tube Investments of India Limited (TII), Tamil Nadu, India, has announced the acquisition of 76% of metal injection molding company Orange Koi Private Limited, Nadupuru, India, now a subsidiary of Tube Investments of India.

U.S. Army Funds Ore-to-Tungsten Program

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has launched a multi-stage technical program to validate a complete ore-to-metal tungsten processing pathway through partners Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) and B&N Mining Inc (B&N). The initiative targets B&N’s wholly owned Atolia Tungsten Project in the Mojave Desert of eastern San Bernardino County, California—the fourth-largest historic tungsten district in the United States.
