U.S. Army Funds Ore-to-Tungsten Program

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has launched a multi-stage technical program to validate a complete ore-to-metal tungsten processing pathway through partners Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) and B&N Mining Inc (B&N). The initiative targets B&N’s wholly owned Atolia Tungsten Project in the Mojave Desert of eastern San Bernardino County, California—the fourth-largest historic tungsten district in the United States.

Ames Lab Launches Advanced Magnet Facility

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames National Laboratory, Ames, Iowa, marked a significant advancement in American materials research with the opening of its new Advanced Magnet Facility (AMF). The ribbon‑cutting ceremony highlighted a major federal investment aimed at strengthening U.S. leadership in magnet science, critical materials, and energy innovation.

 

 

Oklahoma University and ORNL Collaborate

The University of Oklahoma (OU), Norman, Oklahoma, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in collaboration with the Air Force Sustainment Center, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, are launching Phase II of a transformative additive manufacturing initiative aimed at modernizing how the military sustains legacy aircraft. OU has been awarded $8.8 million to support the next stage of the program.

Auburn University’s NCAME Expands

With more than $13 million in funding from the U.S. Army, Auburn University’s National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) is expanding its capabilities to meet the growing demand for large, complex metal components critical to Army modernization and sustainment.

 

 

 

 

Picatinny Arsenal Launches Additive Makerspace

The U.S. Army marked a major milestone in advanced manufacturing with the March 19 ribbon-cutting of the new Additive Makerspace at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. The facility strengthens the Army’s commitment to accelerating innovation through additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping.

Höganäs AB, Höganäs, Sweden has announced the winners of the international PowdrIQ metal powder university challenge, recognizing innovative ideas in metal powder applications addressing future industrial and sustainability challenges. The winners are 1st place: Nian Hong and Shuangfei Yan, Shanghai University in China; 2nd place: Akshay Bankar, Nit Trichy (National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli), India; and 3rd place: Camili Baldessini and Desirée Gomes Heleno Rita, University of Campinas, Brazil.

Refractory ceramics manufacturer Sunrock Ceramics LLC, Broadview, Illinois, has been acquired by Powder Processing and Technology, LLC (PPT GROUP), Valparaiso, Indiana, a wholly owned subsidiary of EJ-Vestco Industries.

VALIMET, Inc., Stockton, California, has been awarded an SBIR Phase II contract for a project based on Scandium-Aluminum Alloy 3D-Printed Parts: Developing & Validating a Domestic Value Chain.
