MIM2019 Concludes in Orlando

Robert DowdingMIM2019, International Conference on Injection Molding of Metals, Ceramics and Carbides, concluded in sunny Orlando, Florida, the last week of February. This year’s MIM conference attracted just over 150 attendees representing 95 companies from 15 countries.

The conference kicked off with Keynote Speaker Robert Dowding, U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Dowding's presentation covered the synthesis of materials and the fabrication of parts and components from these materials. He also presented the ARL Open Campus concept for working with and in the Army Research Laboratory. Dowding was just the beginning of a string of 21 presentations that provided attendees with a wealth of information.

In addition to technical sessions, 28 companies showcased their products and services during a tabletop exhibit that followed Tuesday’s presentations. Twenty-three of the exhibitors provided "infomercials" for their companies intermittently throughout the day on Tuesday.

MIM2019 Exhibitors and Exhibit HallFor the third year in a row, the Metal Injection Molding Association provided seven students with a grant to attend the conference and present a technical presentation. Not only were the grant recipients given the opportunity to hear cutting-edge presentations, make connections with professionals in the field, and gain exposure to the MIM industry, but each provided a presentation on work at their universities.

This year’s grant-winning students were:

  • Jacob Biddlecom, Clemson University, United States
  • Santiago Cano Cano, Montanuniversitat Leoben, Austria
  • Nicholas Labodycz, University of Massachusetts, United States
  • Monica Martinez, University of Louisville, United States
  • Lingbin Meng, Indiana University, Purdue, United States
  • Juan Alfonso Naranjo Simarro, UCLM PIM Research Lab, Spain
  • Jian Zhang, Indiana University, Purdue, United States

Prior to the MIM2019 conference, the Powder Injection Molding (PIM) Tutorial was presented by Rand German, Professor Emeritus of San Diego State University, and attracted nearly 50 students. The PIM Tutorial is a great way for individuals who are looking for a solid grounding in the technology of PIM to obtain a comprehensive foundation in a short period of time.

If you missed MIM2019 and would like to attend next year, mark your calendars for March 2-4, 2020, for MIM2020 in Irvine, California.
