PM and MIM: Touching Your Life

A DVD showcasing the capabilities of metal injection molding (MIM)

PM and MIM: Touching Your Life, a new video showcasing the capabilities of metal injection molding (MIM) as one of the fabrication technologies known collectively as powder metallurgy (PM), is available for purchase in DVD format.

The 15-minute program, aimed at potential end users who may not be familiar with PM and MIM, is built on the theme, "Every day, in some way, PM and MIM touch your life." It is divided into two distinct parts: Part One introduces the viewer to powder metallurgy in general using dozens of examples of actual components to illustrate the part-forming technologies’ benefits, with particular emphasis on their contributions to the concept of sustainability; Part Two deals specifically with the metal injection molding process, providing design engineers with all the facts needed to understand why, if they're designing an intricate metal part, they should think of MIM from the start.

MIM fabricators should find the video an indispensable tool with which to equip their sales and marketing personnel. It is an ideal vehicle to use as a seminar introductory piece. What’s more, companies involved in any aspect of PM and MIM can use it to orient all employees, as it quickly stimulates an appreciation of the value they bring to customers’ products. For complete flexibility of use, Parts One and Two can be accessed independently with a simple click from the opening menu. The new program was produced by MPIF with funding provided by the Metal Injection Molding Association.

Powder Metallurgy:
The Preferred
Metal-Forming
Solution

A DVD showcasing the capabilities of the various technologies known collectively as PM

Powder Metallurgy: The Preferred Metal-Forming Solution, is a video showcasing the fabrication capabilities of the various technologies known collectively as powder metallurgy (PM), available on DVD. The 13-minute production, built on the theme, “Every day, in some way, PM touches your life,” uses dozens of examples of actual components manufactured for many different applications to illustrate the benefits PM offers parts designers and engineers.

The video is aimed principally at potential end users who may not be familiar with the capabilities of conventional PM, metal injection molding (MIM), hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and other PM technologies. Using a contemporary narrated soundtrack and imagery, the piece serves as a brief introduction to the real-world advantages of these state-of the-art forming processes, with particular emphasis on their contributions to the concept of sustainability.

PM parts producers will find the DVD an indispensable tool with which to equip their sales and marketing personnel. It is an ideal vehicle to use as a seminar introductory piece. What’s more, companies involved in any aspect of PM can use it to orient all employees, as it quickly stimulates an appreciation of the value they bring to customers’ products.

The new program was produced under the auspices of the MPIF Industry Development Board with funding provided by the Metal Powder Producers Association.

ferrous2.JPG (12319 bytes)Processing and Properties
of Ferrous Powder Metallurgy Materials:
A Literature Database

By Süleyman Saritas and Alan Lawley

This fully searchable CD spans over 4 decades of literature! The database is a comprehensive literature review of a collection of more than 4, 500 publications embracing the processing and properties of P/M ferrous materials. This important research tool allows the user to search by material, property, and process to arrive at relevant articles in a click of the keyboard.

The task was initiated by performing a literature search via several electronic databases. Subsequently, the major P/M Journals worldwide were scanned to identify pertinent publications. Proceedings of national and international P/M conferences were included as well. To facilitate accuracy in sorting, the "experimental procedures" and "results" sections of each publication were reviewed. Classification in terms of material type and properties, was based on MPIF "Standard 35, Materials Standards for P/M Structural Parts".

The major utility of the database lies in its ability to identify publications relating to a given P/M ferrous material in terms of processing conditions and attendant properties. Letter codes are used to differentiate between processing details (a,b,c,d,…) and specific properties (A,B, C, D,…). Material type is described by a number (1,2,3,4,…). A search using Edit/Find shows the number of occurrences of any name, word or phrase in the text. The CD also includes a list of sources where the user can find the major worldwide P/M Publishers and their contact information.
