Picatinny Arsenal Launches Additive Makerspace

The U.S. Army marked a major milestone in advanced manufacturing with the March 19 ribbon-cutting of the new Additive Makerspace at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. The facility strengthens the Army’s commitment to accelerating innovation through additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping.

Operated by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center, the makerspace provides engineers with a cutting-edge environment to design, prototype, and produce components using additive manufacturing technologies. Facilitated by the Analysis, Materials, and Prototyping Directorate (AMPD) under the Munitions Engineering Technical Center, the space expands in-house manufacturing capacity and supports faster, more flexible development cycles.

Equipped with more than 50 AM printers, the facility offers a wide range of printing technologies and materials, including plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites. Additive manufacturing enables engineers to build complex parts layer-by-layer from digital CAD models, reducing costs and lead times while allowing highly customized designs that traditional manufacturing methods cannot easily achieve.

Army leaders emphasize that the new makerspace will help drive speed and innovation directly to the battlefield. By enabling rapid prototyping and on-demand part production, the facility enhances readiness and reduces dependence on extended supply chains—an essential advantage in contested logistics environments.

The Additive Makerspace reflects a broader Department of Defense push to empower Soldiers and civilians alike to transform ideas into practical solutions. From small replacement components to complex vehicle parts, additive manufacturing continues to reshape how the Army sustains and modernizes its force.
