TOOLING FOR >60 TSI COMPACTION PROGRAM

High-pressure compaction is considered to be greater than 60 tsi.  Many materials can and are being compacted to tonnages greater than 60 tsi.  This program will investigate the latest tool design and tool construction concepts, and is expected to set guidelines for high pressure compaction.  The program is scheduled to commence in 2009.

Program Objectives
(1) Develop design rules specifically for >60 tsi compaction
(2) Develop material selection and heat treatment rules
(3) Develop rules for using tool coatings

Scope
(1) Sources of information
      a) CPMT member experience
      b) Literature survey
      c) FEA Model to predict tool stresses
      d) Conduct compaction studies
(2) Issues to be addressed
      a) Tooling design
      b) Tool material selection
      c) Heat treatment
      d) Tool Coatings
