Powder Metallurgy & Particulate Materials Processing

By industry expert and author
Randall M. German

This book belongs in every engineering library throughout the world and on every powder metallurgist’s and materials engineer's bookshelf.

As an outgrowth from the best-selling Powder Metallurgy Science, published in 1984 with a second edition in 1994, this book is written from a perspective based on the laws of physics, chemistry, mechanics and dynamics, thermodynamics, kinetics and chemical engineering as applied to powder metallurgy and particulate materials.

Subjects include a variety of techniques to fabricate engineered products using principles ranging from materials synthesis to industrial engineering.  Although there is still a heavy emphasis on classic powder metallurgy, there is now an interwoven treatment of composites, technical ceramics and related materials.

The book is both a text and a reference. Written for engineering students with a background in materials, metallurgy, ceramics, industrial engineering and engineered materials, it is also sufficiently basic that it can be used for industrial short courses and self study.

The text is composed of 16 chapters, each divided into many small segments that can be used without reading the whole book.  Appendices are included with definitions, test standards, material properties and answers to selected study questions.

       Fatigue Design Concepts
        by C.M. Sonsino

Morris Sonsino’s work in fatigue design of P/M products has contributed greatly to the store of P/M data however, even more significant is his ability to provide design engineers with guidelines on the unique characteristics of P/M materials and hence on the design concepts and rules appropriate to P/M products.

This title represents a very important “tool” for the PM structural parts industry in its promotion of the use of P/M products in high performance applications.

The publication proceeds to give solid information on the required fatigue notch factors for the presence of external notches and the approach to allowing for mean stress effects. These differ significantly from the factors normally applied for wrought products. In particular, the relatively low notch sensitivity of P/M materials is emphasized.
