CPMT Scholarships

In 1998 CPMT received a $1,000,000 donation from Arlan J. Clayton (click to view a brief video on the career of Arlan J. Clayton) to establish an endowment fund for research & development and education programs to help promote the growth and success of the conventional powder metallurgy industry. As a result, CPMT established the Clayton Family Scholarship for Studies in Powder Metallurgy. Since 2000, CPMT has awarded over 60 students at 6 Universities more than $200,000 in scholarships. Annually, CPMT awards 5 Clayton Family Scholarships of $4,000 each with an additional scholarship funded by Ametek, Inc.

The CPMT Scholarship and Grants Committee solicit proposals from universities for funding an annual academic scholarship for studies in the field of conventional PM.

Typical proposals include:

  • Degree
  • Curriculum
  • Academic eligibility requirements
  • Financial eligibility requirements
  • Selection procedure
  • Renewal provisions
  • Overview of your program as it relates to PM
  • Outline of other PM-related activities, such as laboratory facilities, research projects, industry education programs, co-op or internship programs, and consulting and outreach programs
  • Data regarding the number of students in the program, placement success in conventional PM companies, and history of the program
  • Possible matching funds from the university or from industry
  • Other relevant information that would indicate a strength in and commitment to the field of PM

Axel Madsen Conference Grant Program

Axel Madsen was well-known in the PM industry as a successful entrepreneur. He co-founded Allied Sinterings, Inc., Danbury, CT, in 1959. The company actually began in a converted diner with four employees and went on to develop a successful niche business producing high-precision, small, and intricate PM parts. Madsen was a very creative toolmaker and an expert on high-precision PM parts. He was active in the Powder Metallurgy Parts Association of MPIF and served as a director. Madsen passed away in 1988.

The Axel Madsen Conference Grant Program was established by his family to encourage students to learn more about PM technology and eventually pursue careers in the PM industry.
